Frequently Asked Questions

How does acupuncture work?

Acupuncture supports the body by balancing functional energy, which improves the function of the nervous system, energy, and circulation. This helps to reduce pain, inflammation, and stress in the body leaving you feeling more relaxed and free. Acupuncture is an effective, drug free way of treating and preventing disease that has been in practice for more than 4000 years. Not only does acupuncture treat signs and symptoms, but it addresses the root cause of the problem.

What science is acupuncture based on?

Acupuncture works by stimulating parts of the brain that release natural biomolecules such as neurotransmitters, vasodilators and hormones. Scientific research has shown that these biomolecules activate the immune system and pain regulation mechanisms which results in a broad spectrum of systemic effects. There have been studies conducted with Neuroimaging, Thermal Imaging, and Ultrasound that prove the effects of acupuncture and its benefits.

Does acupuncture hurt?

Acupuncture filaments (thread-like needles) are flexible and comparable to the size of a strand of hair. When inserted it is not painful, but there may be a slight pinch that is often described as a dull, achy, or heavy feeling.  Many  patients even fall asleep in the chairs during the needle insertion or shortly after.

Is acupuncture safe?

Yes, as long as it is administered by a Licensed Acupuncturist, you will be in very capable hands. The filaments we use are sterile and are used ONLY once. After your treatment, the filaments are promptly disposed of in a sharps container.

How many treatments will I need?

This is unique to every individual and depends upon how long the symptoms have been present and their severity. Some will have an immediate improvement in their health while, for most, acupuncture will have a cumulative effect over several visits. In general, 2 acupuncture treatments per week are recommended for the first few weeks.
